Yes, it’s true. I caved to popular demand. I had received more responses to my quitting the comic than I ever had for ANY comic I had done, and I’ve changed my mind, plus I missed drawing the comic. True North will resume, but I’m going to try and improve my artwork and give a fresh look to the characters. There’s a certain way I’d like to draw them, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to. It would require getting Illustrator, which I don’t have the money to get (and I’m not a thief, I’m not illegally downloading a copy, either).

So, okay, that’s that.

True North is done…

I had said for the last two years on several occasions that I would end True North, and now, at last, I have done that. It has been progressively getting harder and harder to develop ideas for True North, let alone find time to actually work on it. Usually, at night, I leave it until the very last minute to work on it, which is terrible, and then I began to dread working on the strip because I was having such difficulty coming with ideas. Anyway, let’s say, I’m relieved that I ended it, but at the same time, there is tremendous sadness and guilt. I have been with these characters, who after awhile, gain such a personality of their own, that they seem like REAL people, so in that respect, it felt like I had pulled my car over the side of the road, shoved the characters out, and drove off, looking in the rear view mirror, wondering if I had done the right thing.

It is sad. I didn’t think I’d feel like this when it ended. Most of my fans have been very positive and supportive about my decision.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse, I don’t want to continually run over the same ground again and again, many times over the years, that’s what it felt like. I don’t want to make the same mistake that other cartoonists had make, lingering too long. Things like Beetle Bailey, Hagar the Horrible, Family Circus, just to name a few. Sometimes, a good artist just should know when to quit, and the likes of Bill Waterson comes to mind.

Eventually, I will get all of the comics up on the website for all to see the complete run of the comic strip, plus some that never made it to print.

Although, I have not ruled out the possibility of returning to the material. Who knows, the characters were editorial before they become sitcom; perhaps they’ll take a different form. Time will tell. I hope I made the right decision.

Hope the True North characters don’t hold it against me.

Flying Ferret: The New Plan

Have two weeks really gone by already? Summer is going fast! Doesn’t help when so much is going on. As you may or may not have heard, Minnesota was hit with a plague of tornadoes. My town was particularly hard hit. Amazingly, despite the level of damage, no one was killed, and injuries were “treat and release” variety. My home and work were untouched, but parts of town are so devastated, homes lost, school damaged beyond use, community center gone, and many business heavily damaged. It’s almost too much to take in. The plans I had this weekend, of course, were cancelled. I see this stuff on TV, of other towns getting hit and the devastation that followed, but you never really can grasp it until it happens to you.

Anyway, with plans cancelled, I’m home now, so I’ve had time to work on this page. I hope you’re getting an idea just what makes these critters tick.

In other news, Eyeskream Comics is going to have big changes. There will no longer be a webcomics “group” but there will be a webcomics forum. All will be explained later, but in the end I will be assuming the eyeskream.com domain, and it will feature many of my comics and ideas. Don’t worry, Flying Ferret will still be around, the address is still there, but you’ll find more of my projects at eyeskream.com when it’s ready.

…the NEW SITE for Eyeskream comics. Comics that were created by me, Doug Curtis, as well as Various Artwork I’ve done over the years. I can’t think of anything to write right now. I’m rather flustered and frustrated, stressed-out from work.

That will pass, but for now, just know that from here I’ll post news about the different projects I’m working on. Everything from Flying Ferret to just art projects or doodles, or what have you….

Welcome to eyeskream.com, my new personal website. All you see here was done by the wonderful Erik Bouchard. My one and only source of inspiration for all my art work and project. Without him I would be nothing, a little insect, I own him my life! So Erik check you email, the $5000 dollars I own you is on the way. This is the first of many to follow since the big success I noe made with all my creations.
