Montreal Comic Con 2010
« on: September 15, 2010, 03:33:05 PM »
I just came back this weekend from my first comic convention. This was in Montreal and it was the third edition.

I was very impress by all the peoples I met there. Vendors, artists and exhibitors. Of course I have take a lots of pictures and here is some of them:

This is me with Ethan Van Sciver. Best known for his work on Green Lantern, Flash and New X-Men. Ethan is a really cool guy and he his one of the hottest artist right now. Ethan is now exclusive to DC and speaking with him he told me that he don't plan to go work for Marvel anytime soon. I ask him to drawn me on of my favourite Marvel villain, Thanos :

This is a really bad ass Thanos!

I also met Yanick Paquette who is from Montreal. Yannick is also exclusive now with DC and will have a new Batman ongoing "Batman Inc." written by Grant Morrison. He was the regular penciler on Ultimate X-Men. I ask him to drawn me Thor on a blank copy of Avengers #1. The ink were done by Michel Lacombe who also ink the upcoming mini serie from Marvel "Loki". And crazy enough Michel was working on it at the con and he show me almost all of the pages of issue #1  :cheese.

I asked Yanick if it was hard to be able to work for Marvel? I was surprise to learn that it is not. He simply send his porfolio and Marvel contact him. If you are good enough and fit with what they are looking, this is it. Then Marvel direct you to other small publisher so that you can show them how good you are on a real print comic. After a while, they contact you back and offer you work on mini series and etc...

And finally the thing I am the most happy with is to have met Elvira, Mistress of the Dark in person. Wow! I still can't believe it! Here she is while signing a photo of her for me:

And check this one, am I a lucky guy or not  :tongue2

At 59, the woman of play Elvira, Cassandra Peterson is still very hot. She is very kind and beautiful! I heard that she will have a new show soon.

One thing that have surprise me a little is that there was no "Webcomic" booth or persons making some of them at all. Maybe this is because there is not many webcomics book artist.

Overall this was a great con, Brent Spiner (Data), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Billy Dee Williams (Lando) and many others actor and artist were there along the famous car of Back to the future movie.

Great shots! Looks like you had a great time! I'm so jealous of you being with Elvira!!

As for the lack of Webcomic booths.  Is it possible they were specifically excluded?  Or have the economic times made it tough low-on-the-comic-totem-pole webcomic creators to go?

Not at all. I think that there is simply not many webcomic artist in Montreal and also that since the Montreal Comiccon were at its third edition, since its kinda new and not as big as other convention, others webcomics artist living near, like in the Toronto area maybe, don't made the effort to go at the con.

Maybe if the Montreal con would have been there at the beginning of Eyeskream, when Christophe of Casual Gamers were with us, since he live in Montreal I would have surely brought a table with him and promote Eyeskream.

I don't know but I got the impression that the big days of webcomic are maybe gone. I don't say that webcomics are dead or anything like that but I think that 3 or 4 years ago, webcomics were strong because the general population just discovered them and since they are not as new anymore, peoples are less interested. And also MArvel, DC and others printed comics publisher are really at the top of their games, with movies like Iron Man, Batman, Predator etc.

I think that's the case, but one would think that with the renewed interest in mainstream comics, people would equally (more or less) seek out online comics.  I don't know.  Maybe they just are not that accessible, or that people are somewhat lazy (like me), and don't take the time and effort to seek them out, or don't have the time (like me).

Anyway, still loving the pictures.  Elvira... :shock
